Emerging from the tired grip of January blues, there was one song that provided a genuine pick-me-up for the year’s solemn beginnings. ‘Heaven Only Knows’ is the very song responsible and it’s creator, Grave Jones is in due need of some praise for such an impressive creation.
On the surface ‘Heaven Only Knows’ can be considered a pop-rock rager and nothing but more but its achievements go far beyond these limiting terms. The track’s opening guitar lines are simply to die for, with a rich tone and melancholic wines being the perfect accompaniment to this dreary winter.
Restless by nature, however, the track soon emerges from its delicate chrysalis. The closing moments of the first chorus marks the dawn of a more sinister tone as the pounding percussion thunders into earshot and Grave delivers a harrowing growl that perfectly subverts expectations and provides the track with yet another dimension. The songwriting expertise should come as little surprise considering Jones’ pedigree. Having previously fronted acclaimed rock band Slutterhouse, the frontman has a plethora of tried-and-tested tricks up his sleeves and ‘Heaven Only Knows’s sleek production and innate replay factor certainly provides good evidence.
The real showstopper, however, the diamond amongst the gold, is Jones’ vocals themselves. Finding distinguishable vocalists in modern music is hard enough, let alone the rock camp, but Grave sits in an inspired midpoint between the sounds of Ozzy Osbourne and Liam Gallagher – a collection of soulful crooning punctuated by the devils sneer. It’s what give the track it’s character, it’s what makes you strain your throat trying to sing along to, it’s what makes the track what it is.
The fact alone that the track marks one part of an upcoming album, Heartrage Hotel, is even more cause for celebration and certainly one that we won’t be missing.
