At a time when the British jazz scene is exploding with innovation and worldwide the jazz mentality is seeping its way into the mainstream, songwriter and guitarist Alex Scheuerer is soon to release one of the most impressive jazz albums of the new year.
Mastered by Andrew Tulloch, who has worked with the likes of Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Jamie Cullum, the album entitled ‘Between Heaven and Earth’ features the stunning vocals of Najwa Ezzaher who found fame in France as a semi-finalist on The Voice.
Featuring the original compositions of Alex himself as well as two unlikely covers – of perhaps the most famous of all French songs, La Vie En Rose and Rihanna’s global hit Diamonds – the album offers a compelling display of Alex Schuerer’s impressive talent. He’s a musician not afraid of approaching the world of pop whilst maintaining the musical ‘vocabulary’ of his jazz training.
Based in London for almost a decade, Alex was born in Geneva to a Swiss father and a Lebanese mother – a heritage which has inspired his music:
“My mother had to leave Lebanon when she was 20 to run away from the civil war… Going back there and seeing the ruins of where she used to live inspired the title track of the album “Between Heaven and Earth”. A country so beautiful it could be heaven but is unfortunately torn apart by nearby conflicts.”
Following in the true fashion of jazz greats such as Miles Davis, the musicians rehearsed for only an hour before recording the whole album. A fusion artist at heart, Alex does not limit himself to the ‘genre’ of jazz but rather records his music in the true improvisational spirit of jazz – the album is filled tight fresh-sounding beats reminiscent of the likes of Hiatus Kayote and tracks such as “Flirting with Sounds” see him drawing influence from electronic music.
