I’ve definitely dreamt of being Debbie Harry and as a Blondie fan you can imagine my excitement this morning when I got sent Canadian LGBT+ rock innovator Mr.Slade’s cover of one of my favourite Blondie tracks ‘Call Me’.
Mr.Slade definitely puts his own spin on this classic with the electronic instrumental and the gritty vocals that fit the backdrop perfectly. By taking the most recognisable features from the original track and making them uniquely his own, Mr.Slade has completely re-imaged this song but not lost any of the character and greatness of the original.
“I chose Call Me as a cover song” continues MR.Slade, “not only am I a huge Blondie fan, but I thought a song about male sex workers could have a slightly more grittier, rougher feel to it. Exploring and clashing with sounds that were either feminine and/or masculine together.”
It can be hard to create an incredible cover track, however, I believe that Mr.Slade has done just that. He’s created his own lane in the musical landscape and moulded the cover song to fit his own unique style. Mr.Slade’s cover of ‘Call Me’ is something that both his fans and fans of Blondie will enjoy.
‘Call Me’ by Mr.Slade is out now on all streaming platforms. Go and show it some love!
