Fan of folk music? We have just the artist for you! With storytelling lyrics and a vocal style that is reminiscent of the best of Bob Dylan, you need to get to know Louisiana’s own, Reece Sullivan! Coming with a new album, ‘Gethsemane’ in February 2023, which is sure to excite anyone who enjoys good music, folk or not. Having finished the album with motivation from his good friend Daniel Sanda, Sullivan creates a musical landscape that is reflective and relaxed, invoking emotions that will leave you thinking about the songs and their meaning long after they’ve played. Having started his journey with music as a three year old when his grandfather gave him his first instrument, a harmonica, Reece Sullivan has since gone on a creative journey that has seen him become a fantastic folk artist. You absolutely cannot afford to miss this!
Starting the album off, is ‘Highway Diner Plates.’ If you’re looking for the biggest link to Bob Dylan in Sullivan’s music, then this is it. The acoustic guitar playing perfectly to give his vocals the platform to shine and for his lyrics to stand out. Everything meshes together well, with each part elevating each other. The second track and lead single, ‘All the While I Was Away’, keeps up with what we saw in the previous track – fantastic music and storytelling lyrics that are told through a quality of vocals that really blow you away. So far, it’s a fantastic start that could just be one of the most promising releases of 2023.
Heading into the rest of the album, it was easy to start to wonder if Sullivan would be able to keep the same standard as the start of the ‘Gethsemane’ – and he very quickly dispels any doubt that he could. Tracks such as ‘Lazy Babe’, ‘Olive Tree’ and ‘The Isle of Hy-Brasil’ showcase that his talent is no fluke, and that his consistency is on another level. Even some of the absolute best artists never quite manage to make an album where each song is as good as the last, but Rece Sullivan hits the nail on the head with each track.
After listening to ‘Gethsemane,’ it’s easy to see that this album is a folk music gem. The lyrics are typical of folk, yet unique and hits all the right emotive notes, with vocals that suit the genre perfectly, with a clear influence from some of the very best to ever do it. Sullivan has musical talent that deserves to be heard, and stories to tell that will resonate with anyone that is willing to listen. Each song contributes to an overall fantastic album that is Sullivan’s third and could also be his best yet. With a release date of February 2023 and previous album releases already under his belt with ‘Middle Sea’ and ‘Arkansas’, there’s time to dive right into the music of Reece Sullivan before the release of his album ‘Gethsemane’. Make sure you don’t miss this!
