If you’re a fan of R.E.M, then you’re going to love this! Israeli-American singer, Yoav Gerber, is back after a five year hiatus to bring us a new EP, titled ‘Noon to Nine’ under his new guise of ‘Maki Supa’.
Collaborating with a veteran producer in Shai Saadia, he gave Gerber everything he needed to achieve a unique soundscape which would serve as the groundwork for his fantastic melodic deliveries which he delivers with a mastery that is obvious from the start. Created in just nine hours, and with expertly made music throughout, the EP serves as a reminder that Yoav Gerber is still someone to keep an eye on.
Starting with ‘Inspirational Song #12’, starting with an intricate, layered beat, it serves as the introduction for Gerber’s vocal work to shine through – lyrics that are written with a dramatic scenario of war time and togetherness, it’s a clear example of lyrical and musical talent that keeps you hooked and waiting for more.
Going into ‘Somewhere in Bretagne’, Gerber keeps the same vocal style but with music that feels more like pop-rock – a welcome change in style as it hits the same heights as the previous track, perfectly meshing with the vocals of Gerber, proving his ability to make music that is able to hop from genre to genre.
Finishing with ‘What Kind Of Day Has It Been’, Gerber is yet again changing styles – with a more dance-pop sound, he delivers a meaningful song about the realities of facing difficulties in life. Again, showing he has the quality to produce music of this calibre and approach, while also showing the flexibility of his songwriting ability, with a much more personal song that is linked to his own experiences.
Overall, ‘Noon to Nine’ is a strong release. Songs that don’t lean too much in any one direction with each one being a refreshing listen, all written with music that is absolutely perfect for Gerber’s vocals. With ‘Somewhere in Bretagne’ already being released on August 30th, you have time to take a look at Yoav Gerber’s music before the full release of the EP on December 1st – don’t miss out!
