Artists to Add to Your Playlists: Orchestra Nova and Their Rendition of Da Sealkie Wife’s Sang. The music scene in Shetland has just added a stunning new addition to its repertoire with the release of Orchestra Nova’s Da Sealkie Wife’s Sang a reinterpretation of the traditional Shetland folk tune composed by Mary-Ellen Odie.
Led by composer Adrian Brockless, Orchestra Nova brings together the best of Shetland’s cultural heritage and the classical tradition in a beautiful and moving piece. The origins of this musical gem are deeply personal. Originally composed as a birthday gift for Brockless’ mother, Da Sealkie Wife’s Sang was part of a trio of pieces that also included a string arrangement of his father’s organ composition and his own composition, Berceuse. But what started as an intimate gift has now evolved into a wider release, with Brockless confident that the music will resonate with both the Shetland community and listeners worldwide.
For Brockless, music runs in his blood. His father, Brian Brockless, was a renowned figure in British classical music and his aunt, Pauline Brockless, was a celebrated soprano who performed with the likes of Ralph Vaughan Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra. This heritage has deeply influenced Brockless’ musical outlook, drawing inspiration from Renaissance choral traditions and classical masters like Olivier Messiaen, as well as unexpected sources like Oasis and The Beatles.
Growing up as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral and later as Head Chorister at Guildford Cathedral, Brockless’ love for music grew, eventually leading him to pursue a career in composition. His move to Shetland has opened up new musical horizons, allowing him to explore the unique folk traditions of the region and incorporate them into his classical compositions. T
his release follows Brockless’ recent work as the producer of an audiobook version of naturalist Bobby Tulloch’s book "Shetland: An Islander, His Islands and Their Wildlife." The audiobook also features two other classical arrangements of Shetland folk tunes, showcasing Brockless’ talent for blending different musical styles. Don’t miss out on experiencing the magic of Orchestra Nova’s Da Sealkie Wife’s Sang now available on all music platforms.
