Something extra-ordinary is emerging from the progressive pop genre, and it’s coming from musical duo VFM125. Their new single, The Light of Ordinary Things, is an incredible mix of surrealism, strangeness, and extra-terrestrial influences – all carefully crafted into an impossible to forget package.
“The Light of Ordinary Things celebrates the arts and how they can lift us from the ordinary into the extraordinary,” said the pair in a statement. “The irony being that the ordinary can sometimes be extraordinary!”
The Light of Ordinary Things combines a distinctly sci-fi soundscape with a clear acoustic guitar arrangement and a touch of distortion from electric guitars in the distant background. The single fits right in with Bowie’s most off-planet ventures, and vocals from David Finney make the track hypnotising and mesmerising. VFM125 is made up of two cousins – life long friends Martin Vishnick and David Finney. Their diverse influences and backgrounds explain why their music has such a progressive charm. Vishnick – a world class guitarist with Rock, Spanish, and Classical music styles – is also a Doctor of Music and has played for audiences across the planet.
Finney is the former co-founder of The Company She Keeps, a band that enjoyed airplay on BBC TV, Radio 1, and MTV – with music videos starring Rik Mayall. Outside of music, both VFM125 members have their own passions and beliefs. Finney is an animal rights activist and volunteer for the non-profit Humane Being, and a prominent spokesperson for The Scrap Factory Farming 2022 campaign which took the UK government to court. Vishnick is a devoted Nichiren Buddist, working towards inner enlightenment and world betterment.
Combine their activism and music together, and you’ve got something truly special in the form of The Light of Ordinary Things – prog pop that’s extra-ordinary in every way.
